  • Hospital Information
  • University Maternity Hospital, Limerick is the second largest maternity hospital outside Dublin with an average of 5,000 births per year and the sole provider of obstetrical, midwifery and neonatal intensive care to the Mid-West region. It serves Limerick, Clare and Tipperary N.R. The maternity hospital also accommodates patients from outside the Mid-west region. These include women from North Cork, Tipperary , North Kerry and areas of Offaly. We also provide tertiary referral for smaller Neonatal Units from outside the region.

Our maternity hospital is a stand-alone maternity service, remote from the acute general hospital across the city. There are seven birthing rooms, two operating theatres, a Maternity Emergency Department, two postnatal wards (27 bedded) and one antenatal ward (29 bedded). In addition, there are outpatient facilities including antenatal clinics, outreach antenatal clinics, parent education classes, Hysteroscopy and Colposcopy services. The Neonatal unit is a tertiary referral unit with nineteen patient treatment spaces. These spaces are occupied by a mix of cots and incubators.

The community midwives provide an Early Transfer Home Service for low risk mothers and babies within a defined catchment area of Limerick City. Two community based antenatal clinics are also provided for low risk women suitable to attend for midwife led care.

The modern Maternal Emergency Department assesses, treats and discharges approx 7500 patients per year while also processing approx 7800 women who require admission. Early pregnancy assessment services through our Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) are in place to support early pregnancy loss and are delivered in a multidisciplinary environment supported by our counseling service. The hospital has Clinical Midwives specialising in Diabetes, Bereavement and Lactation.

The Directorate is a clinical placement site for midwifery, nursing, physiotherapy and medical training affiliated with the University of Limerick. Training provided includes the Post Registration Midwifery Programme and BSc Midwifery Degree (Direct Entry).
