My mother was lucky enough to become a resident of Camoys Court a few months ago having become significantly less mobile than she was and unable to look after herself. Despite seven weeks rehabilitation in a community hospital she could not progress enough to look after herself and the hospital was unwilling to release her to her own home with daytime care as she also needs night time care.
Extra-care accommodation was suggested by the social worker and I must admit I had never heard of this. We count our blessings on a daily basis because the improvement in her is unbelievable.
There are regular (twice daily) activities for her to join (or not) depending on what she wants to do and what interests her, help with her breakfast, meals twice a day in the restaurant (at extra cost but very reasonable), help with showering and changing, help with medication and care on site twenty four hours a day.
After the initial trauma of having to move from her home of fifty eight years, she is now calm, relaxed, happy, content, enjoys a good gossip with her new friends and most of all she is stimulated due to the activities. At the same time she has perceived independence as she is in her own flat and this has helped her to regain her dignity.
Since moving in she has been diagnosed with heart problems but Camoys took this in their stride, took time to discuss this with us and she is coping very well with their help.
I cannot explain in words the feeling of relief and gratitude that we as her family feel for the care that my mother is receiving from the ExtraCare Charitable Trust team who run Camoys.
We dreaded having to tell her that she could not go back to her home but we need not have worried. From the moment she entered the building, she was made to feel so welcome, not just cared for but also cared about due to the excellent and caring staff and she was calling Camoys her home within a few weeks.
One of the activities is "Musical Therapy" which is gentle physio. She loves going to this activity and at the same time it is helping her circulation and keeping her a little more mobile than she otherwise would be.
I have no hesitation in recommending Camoys to anyone who is undergoing the trauma that we experienced for the few months before my mum moved in and I thank the social worker for her excellent suggestion, all the carers for actually caring rather than it just being a job, the expert leadership and everyone else who we have entrusted with the care of my mother and have given her a new lease of life. |
