  • Procedure Information

We understand that undergoing surgery might cause you anxiety and worry, even commonly performed procedures like this one. Our experienced and caring clinical staff will be there with you every step of the way. As well as delivering excellent care and treatment, they’ll answer your questions and provide reassurance if you are worried at any stage.

Having had a general anaesthetic, you’ll be asleep while the surgeon and clinical team perform the surgery.

There are a number of different facelift techniques. Your surgeon will explain the options available to you and the best method to achieve your goals. For a typical facelift, your surgeon will make a surgical cut right around your hairline, past the front of your ears. Cuts may also be made under your chin, if the operation includes lifting a sagging jaw line. Your skin will then be carefully separated from the underlying muscles of your face. Excess fat will be removed and the muscles will be tightened. The skin will then be lifted up, pulled back and any excess will be trimmed off. It will then be stitched back to the line where the cut was initially made.

At the end of a facelift operation, your face is tightly wrapped in bandages. Depending on the exact procedure carried out, these may run under your chin, around your ears and/or over your head.

Another type of facelift surgery is called minimal access cranial suspension (MACS). Shorter cuts, compared to a traditional facelift, are made in the temple and in front of the ears. Fibrous tissues under the skin are tightened with permanent stitches that are fixed to tissue close to the cheekbone or the fibrous connective tissue under the skin. MACS has the advantage of smaller scars and usually a shorter recovery time.

Typically, a facelift takes around four hours.

In for four nights following a lumber fusion. Pre op preparations very well organised, had a few issues getting records updated as insurer had changed since last treatment at same location. My start time moved a few times on day of op which was communicated to me on phone, that helped me avoid a long wait in a room. Excellent care provided post op by all. Had issues getting my pain under control but team worked well to find final routine and combinations, despite me probably being a little grouchy along the way. Food, facilities and support colleagues were great, engaged and friendly. I got moved from my first room to allow a more poorly patient to be nearer nurses, no problem with that and was asked if that was ok. However ended up on the side of next to the road which is noisy especially as window needed to be open due to heat. In addition there is an internal door that has high traffic that bangs when it closes every few seconds which started to drive me round the bend. Also near those rooms are staff areas for dealing with waste and washing which is a little noisy, especially early in morning. That said don’t expect lie ins in hospital! Quiet at night though. Physio support really instructive and next steps very clear. Check out pretty slick, took a little longer to sort meds and always find it strange that a hospital can’t prescribe certain controlled drugs and you have to go to your GP straight away. Parking can be sometimes challenging at busy times but system works well. Ps hot chocolate is out of this world! Overall and having used a few Spire and BMI hospitals in the north west of England this was a good experience dealing with a very painful procedure. Sometimes got mixed communications from different people especially after shift changes but none of this affected my care or safety. Would use again.
