Procedure Information

Cataracts are cloudy areas of the lens of the eye that are normally clear. They can cause blurred vision and other sight problems which can affect your enjoyment of everyday life and your ability to work. Cataracts can usually be removed in a straightforward procedure lasting 20-45 minutes.

Why you might need it
Cataracts are very common, particularly among older people. Its no surprise, therefore, that surgery to remove them is the most common operation performed in the UK, with more than 300,000 procedures carried out each year according to clinical sources.

If you have cataracts you will usually have blurred, cloudy or misty vision. This happens because light cannot pass through the clouded lens to the back of the eye. Or you may see small spots or patches where your vision is less clear. Other symptoms might include double vision or finding it unpleasant to look at bright lights because of the amount of glare.

Our eyesight is fundamental to both our ability to function and for enjoying lifes pleasures - such as reading or watching television. It is frustrating to lose the ability to do these activities and have our enjoyment of life curtailed.

Surgery is the only proven effective treatment for cataracts.

According to guidance issued by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, cataract surgery improves vision and is also associated with improvements in activity, anxiety, depression, confidence and quality of life.

One of our highly trained consultant ophthalmologists will be able to offer you an initial consultation within a few days of contacting us. If you decide to book your cataract surgery with us youll be able to book an operation at a time and place that suits you.

This will usually involve a 20-45 minute procedure carried out after you have had anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye surface. Your surgeon will replace the faulty lens with a new one.

While the NHS offers excellent eye care, some local NHS commissioners are limiting surgery to those who have particularly severe symptoms and waiting lists are long.

Was told on 21st Aug I would receive a date for shoulder surgery within 4 weeks (NHS). Nothing. Have tried repeatedly to call, email etc, no response. Finally they left a voicemail last Friday asking to call back to schedule a date. Ive tried to call and email on various emails and numbers. No response. I am in constant pain and I work full-time so cannot spend every day just trying to get a response. They also said they had left two voicemails on other dates, Ive checked my call logs and voicemails on both mobile and landline and this is untrue. All I want is a response!

I had TKR on 1st Feb . The Nurses were professional, kind, caring and knowledgeable. I felt confident in their care . The catering facilities were excellent. Easy to order , great choice and good quality food . The Catering team were so happy to help , going that extra mile whenever needed ….. ie I was unable to eat my lunch one day (fish and chips) due to taking a particular medicine , and it became cold . They saw this had happened and made me a whole new hot lunch . I was so grateful . They were always smiling , offered advice on food choices and just generally kind and caring . Amazing teams at Roding Spire . Thank you all .

I was sent to this hospital by the NHS due to long wait with the everyday NHS hospitals. My visit to the surgeon was in August this year. The surgeon called me to confirm with me that my operation was affecting my life, and I confirmed it was. He said no problem he will sort it out. I have now waited for 4 months. Every time I call the hospital I speak to extremely polite people who every time say don’t worry they will sort it out asap! As it’s still with funding. How terrible to leave someone in pain for 4 months while they decide if it’s worth it for them to pay for it! I look forward to my next call to the polite staff at this hospital only to be fobbed off again! Roll on December!
