I was left feeling extremely concerned after visiting the pharmacy yesterday afternoon. I was able to purchase a combination of over-the-counter medications - co-codamol, ibuprofen, and pseudoephedrine - without being asked a single question, nor being referred to another staff member, by the member of staff who served me. I was not asked for whom I was buying the medication, what my symptoms were, how long these symptoms had been present, what actions I had taken already, nor asked if I was taking any other medication. These questions are essential for a healthcare professional to ask in order to determine if the customer is choosing the right over-the-counter medication for their symptoms, if it is safe for them to take, and whether or not other treatment may be necessary. Unbeknownst to this member of staff, I have worked in the community and hospital pharmacy sectors for over 5 years and know exactly what I'm doing. However, the side effects of these medications, their interactions with other medications, and exacerbation of pre-existing symptoms of certain conditions can be very serious; even fatal. Both codeine and pseudoephedrine are also easily abused. I reported this to the Responsible Pharmacist who was very professional about the matter and assured me that her staff would be spoken to. Though I remain genuinely concerned for any customers who may have been sold this type of medication in the same apathetic and unprofessional manner as I was, I am hopeful that this will not happen again in future.
