Great location with really friendly and helpful staff, however I always struggle to be seen. I'm young fit and healthy and so if I need to see the doctor it only tends to be for something adhoc and I need to get in quickly to get a prescription. Like today and the phone lines are are not working at all, I've been trying for half an hour since they opened at 8:30 and there is no other way to get hold of them to be seen. The open surgery is an absolute waste of time, you rarely get seen or you have to wait a minimum of an hour which just doesn't work with a full time job. I don't think I've ever gone into an appointment on time, theres always at least a 15 minute delay. I appreciate the pressure there is with the small amount of staff that they have and the volume of people they have to see, but is there not a limit on the amount of patients one surgery can have to help this. Nothing against this surgery and the staff in particular, this is just my experience with them over the years.

Thank you for your feedback, which we're always grateful to receive - and it's particularly good to hear that the staff are friendly and helpful. I'm surprised that you have had problems with the phone this morning, because it's been a fairly quiet morning and nobody else seems to have mentioned a problem. We are installing a new telephone system in October, which will hopefully resolve any future problems - albeit there is a limit to how many incoming lines we can answer at any one time, and there are times when it's difficult to get through because of demand - which is particularly first thing in the morning. Most patients don't feel that Open Surgery is a waste of time - we're one of the very few surgeries in the area that offer such a service, and it's hugely popular with patients. Again that can cause problems with demand and it's impossible on a day to day basis to know how many patients will want to use the service - and patients can on occasions wait for an hour. However, we had 3 clinicians seeing open surgery patients this morning so waiting times were not that long. It is important for all patients to be aware that Open Surgery is for emergency appointments and that does sometimes cause problems because not all patients have problems that can't wait for the next routine appointment. Our next routine appointment if you'd have wanted to take that option would have been 8 days from today. That's a very reasonable waiting time for non-urgent problems - and patients who do work do prefer that option. All appointments are for just 10 minutes - there are times when because of the complexity of patient's problems that appointments take longer than 10 minutes - and we are very aware that all patients need to be prepared to wait on occasions when their appointment is with a doctor who is running late. We ask for the understanding and support of all of our patients on these occasions. I hope I can assure you that we are constantly reviewing and monitoring our appointment systems, availability and waiting times - and hope that we are responsive and doing our best to provide a high level of service to all patients.

Having suffered from an unexpected virus that had a prolonged recovery time, I was in need of someone helping me frame what recovery looked like - how long it might take and how I might feel. I was aware that this would be an estimation and also understood why no doctor really wanted to commit. However the doctor I met at Widcombe on Thursday 27th (drop-in appointment) did exactly what I needed, summarising is succinctly and clearly and rationally.

I joined this surgery when I moved to bath last summer. The reception staff are really lovely and do everything they can to help, but I have had the following issues since last summer (keeping in mind I am generally healthy and rarely need to visit the doctor): - When I first joined I was told that doctors like to carry out a new patient appointment, so I booked one in and took time off work to attend. When I saw the doctor she seemed surprised that I had been asked to see her, as I had no ailments to discuss and they don't ask to see new patients unless they have specific issues. - I have tried to call numerous occasions where there has been no answer. This has recently improved but I tried to call at least four times over one particular week (all during working hours) with no answer. - Their travel services are really awful. At my old surgery I was able to call and book a phone appointment with a nurse, who would ring to tell me what jabs are up to date, which ones I needed and then book in an appointment to get them. At Widcombe you have to go to the surgery in person (difficult if you work full time) to complete a travel form and submit it. You then have to be available on Wednesday afternoons to see the nurse- if you can't do Wednesday afternoons they won't accommodate any other days or times full stop. The nurse also won't phone you to tell you which jabs you need- so my partner booked time off work to go to the travel clinic on a Wednesday afternoon, only to be told that his vaccinations are all up to date and there was no need for his appointment. I appreciate that they are doing their best and their funding will only stretch so far, but if you work full time or travel often I wouldn't recommend this surgery.
