I have been a patient since Doctor Ponder and have usually been satisfied with treatment. However, today I received a text advising me to make an appointment for a 'flu jab. Two dates were given; 19th September 2020 and 26th September 2020. I rang the given number and held on for almost half-an-hour. I was in position one but no-one answered; I was constantly given the recorded music and messages. I hung up with frustration

A simple prescription shouldn't be so hard, yet the surgery seems more than capable of making false promises, telling you one thing and to your face, very loudly in front of busy waiting room explaining that you're wrong and those things were never promised. I was given an incorrect prescription, and then I asked to change it which was backed by a surgeons letter. This was promised that it would happen right away, and it was be processed the following day. It wasn't. So I left it for a couple of days, and came back. Still not done. Popped to the surgery to try and get to the bottom of it, and was told they had the letter, and the prescription was lost somewhere. So reissued it. Incorrectly. Came back 10 minutes later, to find a new receptionist who couldn't find the same letter the previous one could, and then had her (I assume) manager come and shout me down in front over everybody and tell me that I was wrong, what I was told in both my previous visits was wrong, and that I had to go away and come back when then "might have had a chance to look into it" or I could call back tomorrow morning!! Anybody who has ever tried to call this surgery will know what a joke that is. This isn't the first time, and it won't be the last. I've never known a more uncompassionate or impersonal way to have to deal with illness and what are often embarrassing and personal issues. This isn't down to a lack of funding, or a lack of staff. It's down to having rude and arrogant staff members who seem to give the impression that patients (who I'm sure would rather not be there) are getting in their way.

This sounds as if the issue wasn't a simple prescription and that there is something more complicated to this, as we process 300 + prescriptions a day, usually without complications. If the staff were rude in anyway I apologise on their behalf but it is very unusual that a staff member is rude to patients as they know this is not how to behave. Often, as you correctly point out, people do not want to be at the surgery and find dealing with issues stressful and this can sometimes be misinterpreted as rudeness by both parties and conflict arises. Prescriptions requested by outside agencies, such as private surgeons and some NHS outpatients departments is putting the financial and medico-legal risks from them to the GP practice, for medication they should be issuing in the first place. It is important to get these prescriptions correct and from your statement it looks like there was a mistake. Many practices now refuse to issue these prescriptions and return them to the hospital or private clinic to do so. Legally we do not have to issue on a third party request. Calling us is not a joke; we are trying our best. Last year 700,000 more patients registered in surgeries and this is against the NHS giving primary care 8% of the budget when it should be at least 12%. There are also 500 fulltime GPs less; so it is about resources and staffing levels. At Twyford we lost 2 partners 18/12 ago and have not been able to recruit, like for like. Please let me know your name and date of birth and I can investigate what went wrong, as anonymous comments, valid or not, do not help us to investigate. Please send the details FAO Dr Ruffle at info.twyford@nhs.net and it will be passed on to me.

I have been using Twyford surgery for 3 years and never had a problem with them. I am generally fit and healthy and I don't often require the doctor, but when I do I always get an appointment that suits and I find the receptionists go above and beyond to advise. Sometimes they have advised going to a walk-in (which I didn't know existed and was definitely a better option for my situation). I try to consult a pharmacy for minor things. The quality of the doctors at the surgery is really high. they listen and show empathy and explain thoroughly so I understand. I have moved about around London, and Hampshire before that and this is the nicest surgery I have used. YES you have to wait to get through on the phone sometimes, YES sometimes all the appointments are gone so you need to call back in the PM or next morning. BUT that's the same for every surgery I've ever been to. AND if the matter is urgent and are willing to explain your problem with the receptionist they will do their best to have you squeezed in with a phone appointment. I think half the problem with doctors surgeries countrywide is that people are miss-using them, not the surgeries themselves.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. You, correctly, have pointed out the main difficulties we have in providing healthcare. Funding and staffing are part of the solution to offer a more responsive service but you cannot supply more with less and we appreciate the demand outstrips our ability to supply. We try to triage (to sort) our patients to see the best person and it seems you already do that for yourself and we hope that more people gain the confidence to do that in the future. We always send comments to all of our staff and your message will be well received. Thank you.
