This is one of the best facilities I have encountered in 35+ years in healthcare. It has the look & feel of a 5 star hotel, no smell; visiting a pleasure for all the family. Meals in the restaurant leisurely with wine for some. The design of everything is with much thought, furniture, carpet colours, glass colours etc. The bathrooms show what a little thought around light and tile can achieve. Apartments vary & stays priced according to size & care needs, staffing levels are high & from waiting & maintenance to care team all proud to work there & shower residents with love. It is a large home but the care teams are floor based & strong relationships soon develop. Those with dementia have a dedicated floor although most frail elderly have some senior moments and these are managed with respect and dignity My mother had long resisted help; we were at crisis point, we persuaded her to go in for two weeks and on the third day she asked to stay. The alarm system is excellent - different for help needed, urgent help needed and pressure sensor for alerting when someone steps out of the bed/chair, all carers carry a gadget that alerts them to all assistance required in their area, responses were very good. Mothers' pain was managed, ulcers improved immediately , things that had caused anxiety also removed e.g. falling, getting to the loo, eating well, isolation The activities were excellent - music, bridge, quizzes, trips out as well as 1-2-1, there were also events e.g. brass band, visiting horse! The garden had a nice circuit for wheelchairs with a gnome game that kept us entertained in many walks around, Her passing was perfect, peaceful, GP response spot on and the care staff sensitive; all family wishes met, If I can have the same end of life I will be very lucky. if you can afford South Lodge go,

My father passed away in South Lodge yesterday, and I wanted very much to write this review as a counter opinion to some others on here. Dad went into South Lodge in February 2016 for respite care after a couple of falls at home, but after only 2 days the nurses were not happy with the colour & swelling on his foot, the GP was called & as a result Dad had his right leg amputated above the knee due to blood clots from the falls. He spent some 7 weeks in 2 different hospitals, Leicester Royal and then Lutterworth cottage hospital. It was clear he could not move himself or live alone any longer and he took the choice to return to South Lodge. His room was on the ground floor, with a wet room & kitchenette, although he didn't use that, and a patio door to the gardens. Throughout his time in South Lodge, he was cared for, well fed and when he preferred to stay in his room, he was able to do so. The nurses and care teams could not have been kinder, even though he was sometimes rude to them. He was able to have his own choice of food, even things that were not on the menu, and had his meals in his room. When he was unwell they looked after him even with incontinence issues & a catheter, and the care team always had time to chat with him and with visitors, and offer drinks to us. There was never an "old people home" smell, he was clean and safely moved every time with a hoist. He had his own TV and his own phone line into the room, and a library of paperbacks to work through. The managers were often around and available to talk, the key care workers assigned to him were readily available if I had questions, and when he passed away it meant a lot that so many came to say goodbye at the end of their shifts, or were visibly upset to have lost him. As his family we were able to visit whenever we wanted, and got to know many of the staff - from the laundry & housekeepers, to the maintenance man and all the carers and nurses, we felt he was properly looked after and that they did really care and have time for him, and for us after he died.

My mother lived here for 9 months up to June 2016. It is the only place we could find where she could pay for a whole flat to herself and as much care (on a sliding scale) as she needed. The facilities are outstanding, with a range of sizes of rooms and flats, standard ensuite bathrooms and kitchenettes, even some with their own small gardens. There is a shared garden easy to walk around, spacious and well laid out communal areas, a large and well organised activities room, and a reception and lounge looking like a 5-star hotel. It was usually clean, quiet, had friendly staff and lucid residents. There was a comprehensive activities programme which stood out from the usual fare, and regular meetings for residents to feed back to staff. It is a large care home with separate management of housekeeping, kitchen, client liaison, care, maintenance, and of the care teams on each of four floors. Sadly, while my mother was there, the management of care on her floor was not functioning well. There were significant problems with food, adaptation to disability, internal and external communication, and staff morale. Raising concerns worsened our relationship with her care team, so we gave up trying to escalate them. My mother did not feel safe, and we were looking for a new care home when she died, a few days after her third fall there, though the coroner determined that she died of natural causes. Because of the inquest, it was some months before I could discuss with senior managers the problems we had observed. It then emerged that they had largely shared, and since dealt with, our concerns, particularly by changing the management of the relevant care team and improving communication systems. They assure me that there have been great improvements as a result in most of the areas where my mother experienced problems. Some problems remain harder to change, such as aspects of the building and the corporate brand that do not adapt well to disability, and interactions with local health services affected by wider funding pressures. South Lodge offers a range of care services that has no local competitor, and it could be a wonderful place to spend your last years. My impression is that it works well for residents with low care needs who want full board sheltered living. It is a pity it did not work so well, in my mother's case, for someone with more complex disabilities. I hope this has now improved as I have been assured. Senior managers were certainly helpful in giving time to listen to my concerns after my mother died, and I wished we had felt able to pass them on while she was still alive. When she was admitted, admissions were dealt with by the client liaison team and the senior care manager, and did not include meeting the general manager. I suggest meeting the general manager before choosing this home, and asking how they would respond to any concerns or feedback you might have before they become a complaint.
