    I don't know why on earth this doctor's is taking on new patients when I can't even get an appointment at Emley surgery despite living 30 yards away. i have had 1 appointment in 18 months and we are forced to go to middlestown surgery and even then it is 4-5 weeks for appointments and that costs £30 in taxis. There needs to be a stop on patients booking in advance so they get an appointment not fair on the rest of us. Yet I have tried to change doctors but none available in catchment area. But there is 5 or 6 several GPS surgeries in scisset,shepley,kirburton,skelmanthorpe etc that are only between 1 and 2 miles away but I dont qualify as not in geographical area. It is absolutely ridiculous and needs looking into. No wonder people go to A&E and clog it up

    We always welcome comments about the services the practice offer. We have an open list and will continue to accept new patients. Patients have a choice of practices they can attend. The practice offers all available appointments at 3 sites. Flockton and Emley are branch sites with more limited opening times and a much narrower range of facilities. We encourage patients to pre-book appointments on the understanding that these are by nature more limited. Unfortunately we do not have sufficient resources to run fully resourced service at more than one site, and so the majority of the patients are seen at Middlestown. We do try to make arrangements for people who find travel to the main site difficult, but there will clearly be times we cannot guarantee rapid access at a branch sites. We are sorry there are costs for patients to travel to us, but this is unavoidable in a practice with a large geographical catchment area. We also have to consider the needs of patients travelling from equally distant areas and offering a greater number of appointments at the branch site would inevitably affect our ability to offer the broad range of services at Middlestown. We refute any suggestion that waiting times for appointments are four to five weeks in advance: there are numerous appointments available every week at Middlestown and at the time of writing there are 11 branch site appointments free in the next 2 weeks. We have no influence on the availability of registration or appointments at other practices but would recommend that the correspondent seeks the advice of the practice manager or NHS England if he/she wishes to explore this further. We would note that the distance to A & E is considerably greater than that to any of the practice sites and would carry a much greater cost to the correspondent. We keep a close note on A & E attendance and have not seen significant numbers of our patients attending, probably because we generally offer rapid efficient and effective access. In order for us to do this however the correspondent must accept that we cannot necessarily accommodate access as rapid at the branch sites and that there may be a responsibility placed on the patient to travel to the main surgery. We are sorry that this carries a cost to the patient but trust that the reason is clear. We trust that this is accurate and fair response to these comments. The correspondent may not be aware of our patient participation group. This is open to any patients and we do take sensible constructive comments on board and attempt to improve the services we offer whenever possible. Middlestown Medical Centre
