Used to be you could ring up this surgery 8.30 am and get an appointment with the doctor you most trusted and were used to either that day or within a few days. No longer. Now you have to go through several hoops even to get to see a doctor and then it's unlikely to be the doctor of your choice and after waiting potentially an hour on the phone to get through (particularly if it's a Monday morning). First a receptionist, then you sit around waiting for a doctor to call - that is you have to talk your problems through with at least two people you may not know at all before they'll even decide to give you an appointment. The model makes you feel as if you no longer have a right to primary health care. Some of the doctors are still great IF you can get to see them. I hope someone is monitoring what this does to rates of illnesses such as cancer in this surgery's catchment area - it has certainly put me off trying to go and see a doctor unless I really need to.

Our practice list size has continued to grow over the years which we see as a testament of the quality of the care that we seek to provide. However the increase in numbers meant that the previous appointment system could not cope with patient demand. The majority of the appointments were face to face and were allocated on a first come, first served basis using the 8.30am call in. Once the appointments were full patients were asked to call back another day. There was inadequate triage to establish urgency or clinical need. Telephone triage and management of patients is recognised to be effective for many ailments that would have otherwise have used up GP Face To Face appointments unnecessarily. The GPs make a clinical judgement about whether a patient needs to be seen or can be safely treated over the phone. The system has not been designed to "avoid seeing patients", it is designed in recognition of the limited availability of appointments with a Clinician. We are constantly reviewing the service we provide and the new appointment system was the result of a large project involving members of all three Lewes Practices. There are an equal number of appointments available to book on the day or in advance for patients with a chronic condition, as well as a large number of appointments for patients who have a new minor ailment. With the majority of our practitioners working part-time continuity has always been a challenge for us and is not a symptom of the new appointment system. All of our GPs rotate on the rota as a Duty Doctor, hence it feels that there are very few appointments available each week for patients who require management of a long term condition with a specific Doctor when that GP is only in the surgery two days a week. With four receptionists answering the calls the appointments do go very quickly so we do encourage patients to see a GP from the same team as their usual Doctor as a best endeavour to maintain continuity and manage your health.

i am amazed to see the surgery is advertising for more patients when clearly it is not coping with the numbers it has When I ring to get an appointment I do so as a last resort. It is because none of my home remedies have worked an I clearly need medical intervention. It is unhelpful and often distressing trying to get to see a gp. The system does not work. Ringing then waiting hours for a call while being very unwell is distressing. Then when the call does come being told there are no appointments left for the day even if you rang at 08,30!
