I needed to have a new bridge as my previous bridge fixed by a Dentist many years ago suddenly broke and fell out. I contacted several Dentists in my area of North west London and were informed either they only treat on a private basis or they are unable to take new NHS patients. I was recommended to Approach Dentistry by a family member. When I called, I received a warm welcome and was given an appointment the very next day Tuesday 10/10/2017. I was told that I did not have to pay anything for my treatment as I am on Benefits. I did not have to wait and Doctor greeted me. The very first appointment, Xrays were taken, as well as impressions and I was told a tooth needs to be extracted near the previous Bridge and I would need a partial Denture and it be ready next Tuesday which is today 17/10/2017. My tooth was extracted very gently and pain free. In fact I wasn't aware my tooth had been extracted until Doctor told me. I am delighted with my partial Denture although it will take time to get used to it. The colour match is perfect. I was explained in detail how to look after my partial Denture and was shown how to fix it on and remove it. I was also given a free tooth brush and a tube of Denture glue. I was explained how to look after and clean the partial Denture. I can say without hesitation that my experience with Approach Dentistry was excellent. I was treated with great kindness and patience. All Staff were very polite and professional. Receptionists are very obliging and most helpful. I would say that as an NHS patient, my treatment was second to none and as good, if not better, than a private patient. Highly Recommended.

I believe this practice has failed me because it does not consider me worthy of being their patient. All I want is to be rid of the pain that I have been suffering for the last month and a half. Yet, because I am an NHS patient, I don't deserve proper treatment. I was booked for a hospital appointment to remove a broken tooth. I was told I was being referred because it was too difficult to handle for the dentist. However, I have since heard that hospitals aren't accepting patients because of the current crisis. It was then suggested that I go and do the work privately. But being told to do the work privately is the same as getting it done with this dentist, in my view. That's why I feel I have been subject to very poor treatment.

I am sorry to hear that you feel we have not provided you with appropriate treatment. In some circumstances, and quite often with extractions, dentists referrer out of general practice to a specialist if it is considered in the patients best interest, in the same way a GP would refer out for certain opinions or treatments. Unfortunately the hospitals are accepting less and and less referrals, which is completely out of our control. You would have been offered private treatment as another avenue to explore, however you would have still been referred out of the practice, so it is not the same as being treated on the NHS with us. If you wish to discuss this with the dentist, then he would be very happy to explain our referral procedures and try to resolve this problem for you.

It is not at all clear if the people who gave 5 stars were treated as NHS patients or as private ones. But we should know, after all this is an NHS website. Like many other dental practices Approach too offers both NHS and private treatments,so without knowing if the 5 star reviews were written by people treated on a private basis or not I take their reviews with more than a pinch of salt. This dentistry is now offering less and less to NHS patients. Over a period of time I had to have several teeth extracted, every single time I was referred to a hospital. I find it unbelievable that the NHS dentist was incapable to do any of the extractions himself no matter which tooth it was. More recent disappointment is that I had a bad toothache and the dentist could not diagnose the cause. Gave me some antibiotic which did not work and spoke about sending me to some specialist for a complicated root canal treatment. My impression was that it would not be on the NHS. In the end I was forced to go private. The crown on the aching tooth was promptly removed and the infection under it cleared .The pain stopped immediately. To this day I do not understand why the NHS dentist at the Approach dentistry could not do the same.Wonder if they would have acted differently had I been a private patient.

Thank you for taking the time to review our practice. We strive to offer excellent care and service and we are sorry to hear that you feel we haven't delivered on this occasion. As with all general dental practitioners and indeed GP's you will find that some treatments will require a referral to a specialist in order to obtain the very best result. Although a root canal treatment or extraction may seem like routine treatments, they can be incredibly complex. We will always refer out to a hospital or specialist if it is felt that it is in the patients best interest and this will be on a case by case basis. We do also offer treatment on a private basis, but you wouldn't have been offered this in the practice in replacement of a procedure that could have been carried out under the NHS (providing you were a patient with us under the NHS). Please be rest assured that the dentists always offer all treatment based on what is felt to be in the patients best interest and for the best result.
