    Dementia Care in Wiltshire

Miranda House has been designed to meet the University of Stirling’s standards for dementia care, which are widely acknowledged as providing the best living environment for people living with dementia. Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre is renowned as the world leader in this field. The Stirling approach ensures that residents are able to move freely around the home, with bedrooms and communal areas appropriately laid out and clearly signposted to minimise confusion or disorientation. Each bedroom features a memory box by its front door, where mementos from a resident’s life help to personalise their room and also remind staff and visitors of the individual’s life story.

    Alzheimer Care

Miranda House is ideally equipped to provide residential support for elderly people living with different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and Korsakoff’s syndrome. However, staff never lose sight of the fact that, first and foremost, Miranda House is home to residents. The home has a light, airy and welcoming ambience and residents benefit from a broad and stimulating range of activities.

My father was here at Miranda house for 7 months October 2015 to June 2016. This care home was offered to my father as an emergency permanent care home because my mother could no longer care for my father at home. During the 7 months my father was in their care (if that's what you can call it) of Miranda house my father lost 3 stone in weight mainly because the management and staff couldnt provide for his dietry needs, he is ceoliac which isnt rocket science! On the majority of my visits there would be no snacks or food available on the mobile trolly between meals. Rarely staff would interact with any of the residents not even eye contact when passing in the corridors during my evening visits staff were few and far between. I witnessed some awful things where residents were told by staff there wife was dead when a resident asked for her. Almost on every visit I would find a new cut, bruise or scratch to which the staff new nothing about and failed to keep a record off. One of the nurses was very hostile towards me in front of the regular doctor. Prescriptions would take 3 days to collect once the doctor had percribed it. Plug sockets swithed on with the tv plugged in were hanging off the wall as well as door handles with screws missing. My father had managed to get out into the garden and no one new how long he hadid been out there, he suffered cuts and bruises whilst out there it had also been raining. My dad became depressed and although he had alzehmiers he still recognises family members and always manages to smile however within his time at Miranda house he became slumped in his posture, solom and pale. Communication between staff and management were none existent which at the best of times were very frustrating but even more frustrating and depressing when you have to inform new staff (which is constant there is a high turn over of staff) of your loved ones care plan. In my opinion staff and management are very undertrained and are not proving an adequate care home for your loved ones. I have evidence on my phone to prove this too. I could go on but if you read the quality care commision report everything I picked up on whilst my dad was in this awful place ccq also did too and furthermore swindon council will not be offering this home to any more potential residents!! If you are thinking of this care home potentially for one of your loved ones please do your research take your time and look at other care homes before you make the worst decision of putting your loved one in this disgusting inadequate unsafe so called care home. I was not the only residents family member to have these concerns My dad is in a new home now, Abbey house, he has settled in well he is smiling again he has colour in his cheeks the management, nurses and carers are constantly giving the respect and quality of life you would only dream of in these circumstances of this awful disease.

My mother suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. She was a determinedly independent lady but eventually was persuaded by her friends and family to move in with me. I cared for her at home and, being an experienced professional carer myself was determined to ensure that she would never have to go into a nursing home. It is however difficult to predict the precise course this illness will actually take, and we reached a point where it was no longer possible to keep Mum at home, even with two experienced carers. As soon as I started speaking to people at Miranda House I could tell that they fully understood my Mum's care needs, both on a professional and a human level. A lot of attention was paid to detail in the initial care assessment and they all showed genuine kindness to us both. Mum and I were both able to warm to staff who were friendly and compassionate at all levels of the organisation. Despite the challenges posed by some of Mum's states of mind (which were symptomatic of this most cruel of illnesses) I never had reason to lose the confidence I was able to have in them from the beginning. I was exhausted from years of being a full-time carer but was then able to recover knowing that Mum was in safe and competent hands and surrounded by people who were not only professional but truly kind-hearted and with real conviction about the value of their work. The 24 hour nursing staff always made sure any infections or other ailments Mum had were promptly treated. I never had to chase things up that had gone unnoticed or ignored. The staff take pride in their work and are very conscientious. Good agreements were always reached about Mum's care needs, which were complex. Despite all My Mum's anxieties (which came with the illness) the kindness and good humour she received from all the people working at Miranda House enabled me to maintain a good close relationship with her through chatting and playing music and singing with her, right up to the very end of her life. In Mum's final days she was kept comfortable and I felt very well supported while staying with her as she died. Mum was at Miranda House for two years and thee months and died in January 2016. I still feel profoundly sad that she suffered this terrible illness and that she is now gone but I would not hesitate in recommending this nursing home. If I ever develop the same condition as my Mum these are the people I would trust to take care of me.
